Cholesterol

I’m changing my diet to try to lower my
cholesterol.  How long will it take to see results?

Many doctors think that it takes months for a cholesterol-
lowering diet to work, but a study from New Zealand shows that it
takes only two weeks for a diet to lower cholesterol as much as it
is going to do.  This study confirms most others, showing that
you get the maximum cholesterol lowering effect from diet very
quickly (Nutrition Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases,
Volume 12, Issue 5, 2002).  If you have a high cholesterol, go on
a diet that restricts saturated fats, partially hydrogenated oils
and all refined carbohydrates.  Increase your intake of vegetables,
fruits, whole grains, beans and other seeds.   Then ask your doctor
to recheck your cholesterol after two weeks.  If it  is not normal,
you need to be more strict with your diet or you may need to take
medication.
